Breathe Easier: Taking the First Step This World No Tobacco Day

Every year on May 31st, World No Tobacco Day reminds us of something both simple and powerful: quitting smoking is one of the most important steps you can take to improve your health.

I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals at all stages of their journey; those just beginning to think about quitting, those who have tried to quit before, and those celebrating milestones they once thought were out of reach.

If you’re reading this and wondering whether it’s “the right time” to quit, here’s the truth: there’s no perfect moment. But there is today

Why quitting matters at any stage

It’s never too late to benefit from quitting smoking. Within:

  • 20 minutes: your heart rate begins to drop

  • 24 hours: carbon monoxide levels in your blood normalize

  • Weeks to months: your lung function improves

  • Years: your risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer decreases significantly

Your body begins to heal almost immediately.

It’s not just a habit, it’s a process

Quitting smoking isn’t about willpower alone. Nicotine is highly addictive, and smoking is often tied to routines, stress, and emotions. That’s why many people need multiple attempts before quitting for good, and that’s completely normal.

What matters is not how many times you’ve tried, but that you keep trying.

Support makes a difference

You don’t have to do this alone. Evidence shows that people are more likely to quit successfully when they have support. This can include:

  • One-on-one counseling

  • Nicotine replacement therapy (patches, gum, lozenges)

  • Prescription medications

  • Support from family, friends, or healthcare providers

Even small steps like delaying your first cigarette of the day or reducing how much you smoke can build momentum.

Free support available at our clinics

At the North Shore Family Health Team, we offer smoking cessation support tailored to your goals. Patients can book an appointment to meet one-on-one with a trained counsellor and receive up to 6 months of free nicotine replacement therapy (patches, gum, lozenges, or inhalers)

Whether you’re ready to quit now or just starting to think about it, we’re here to support you- without judgment and at your pace.

To learn more or book an appointment, please contact your local clinic - JE Stokes Medical Centre or the Aguasabon Medical Clinic.

If you’re not ready to quit yet

That’s okay. Consider starting with awareness:

  • When do you smoke most often?

  • What triggers the urge?

  • What might you change, even slightly?

Change often begins with noticing patterns.

A message for World No Tobacco Day

This isn’t about guilt or pressure. It’s about possibilities.

Whether today is your first day without a cigarette, your tenth attempt to quit, or simply the day you begin thinking about change, you are moving in the right direction.

If you’re ready to take that next step, support is here.

Because every cigarette not smoked is a win, and every step forward counts.
