September Is Suicide Awareness Month
September is Suicide Awareness Month - a time to talk openly about suicide, reduce stigma, remember those we have lost, and remind one another that help and hope are possible.
According to the Government of Canada, 4,394 people died by suicide in Canada in 2024.
Behind every number is a person, a family, and a community.
What can we do?
Sometimes the most important thing we can do is simply check in and listen.
Ask a friend, child, parent, coworker, neighbor, or loved one:
“How are you really doing?”
If you're worried about someone, it's okay to ask directly:
“Are you thinking about suicide?”
Asking does not put the idea in someone's head. It can open the door to an honest conversation and help someone connect with support.
We don't need to have all the answers. We can listen without judgment, take people seriously, and help them find support.
Remember:
You matter.
You are not alone.
It's okay to ask for help.
It's okay to ask someone else if they're okay.
Help is available.
🇨🇦 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline: Call or text 9-8-8, 24/7, anywhere in Canada.
If someone is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.
Let's make suicide prevention more than a conversation for September. Let's keep checking in, keep listening, and keep reminding each other that no one has to face a difficult moment alone.
